The new route of rhinoplasty: why international patients are looking to Brazil

With technological advances and a growing demand for natural results, nasal surgery is experiencing a global expansion, and Brazilian specialists are beginning to attract patients from different countries.

The global cosmetic surgery market is experiencing a period of strong growth driven by technological innovations, increasingly sophisticated surgical techniques and a shift in patient behaviour. Rather than dramatic transformations, the current trend prioritises natural results, facial harmony and personalised procedures.

Within this context, rhinoplasty has established itself as one of the most sought after facial procedures worldwide. The growing demand has not only impacted the medical sector but has also strengthened what is known as international medical tourism, in which patients travel to other countries in search of highly specialised professionals.

Although traditional centres of aesthetic medicine are located in Europe, particularly in countries such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany, emerging destinations have begun to gain space in this global market. Brazil, internationally recognised for the quality of its surgeons and the significant volume of procedures performed each year, has increasingly gained prominence in this scenario.

Cities such as Salvador, in the state of Bahia, have gradually become part of this international circuit. Known for its cultural richness, historic architecture and stunning coastline, the capital of Bahia is also beginning to attract patients interested in specialised treatments.

Among the professionals contributing to this movement is otorhinolaryngologist and facial surgeon Dr Edson Leite Freitas, a rhinoplasty specialist who completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic Surgery at the University of São Paulo (USP).

With a career dedicated to nasal surgery, the physician has already performed procedures on patients from all 27 Brazilian states and 19 countries, demonstrating the increasingly international reach of Brazilian aesthetic medicine.

According to Dr Freitas, approximately 50 percent of his patients come from outside Salvador, mainly from Brazil’s Northern and Northeastern regions, reinforcing the growing flow of patients seeking specialists in rhinoplasty.

For the surgeon, the evolution of modern rhinoplasty is directly linked to understanding facial harmony and the individual identity of each patient.

“The nose plays a central role in facial balance. Contemporary rhinoplasty does not seek to create a standard of beauty, but to preserve the patient’s identity while achieving facial harmony,” he explains.

The combination of medical specialisation, surgical experience and the unique atmosphere of Salvador creates an increasingly attractive environment for patients travelling in search of facial procedures.

For many of them, the recovery period also becomes a cultural experience. During post operative care, patients have the opportunity to explore the gastronomy, history and landscapes of the Bahian capital, turning the procedure into part of a broader experience.

As global demand for personalised aesthetic procedures continues to grow, specialists such as Dr Edson Freitas help reinforce Brazil’s position as one of the world’s leading references in plastic and facial surgery.
